There are a number of solar ovens but the box solar oven is the oldest and the most commonly used solar ovens which can be made at home. These types of ovens are made up of sheet metal and wood. These types of ovens have large reflectors as the result of which a very temperature is maintained inside it. This oven lasts long.

Parabolic solar ovens have the reflectors which focuses the sunlight on the cooking vessel. The wooden base around this oven is helpful in insulation. For making best solar ovens at home, one needs to have cardboard and other simpler materials. Also, the inner walls of the solar oven are sometimes not painted black as the wall of the oven gets heated up instead of food and apart from that they are sometimes be very toxic as they give out fumes. Instead of insulation from fiberglass one can use natural fibers. The box of the oven should be an insulated metal box. To let the heat flow in, the front of the oven should be made up of glass. The aluminum reflectors of the oven should surround the glass front. The oven itself and the reflectors of the oven are made up of galvanized aluminum.

If you plan to prepare solar oven by yourself at home then you need a galvanized metal sheet and it is better to get the cutting and bending of that metal sheet done by some metal shop before you go ahead. You can test the oven made by you on any sunny day. To test your homemade solar oven set it in the sun so that it faces directly to it. If it is kept on the edge of the picnic table it would work well. Now, you have to loosen up its screws to open its reflectors. Now, you can swing the reflector of the oven up and down and by doing so you would be able to judge the right position of the oven just by watching the sunlight which reflects into the oven.  One can also insert the thermometer inside the oven which gives one an idea about the cooking time.
