Orion Energy Systems, Inc have developed an energy efficient lighting system designed for parking lots and car parks. The lighting increases light output compared to legacy high-intensity discharge lights, yet decreasing energy consumption by 50%! The fluorescent lighting fixtures have been designed to fit on existing lighting poles, and just need adjustment to get the angle to match the desired lighting pattern.
The U.S. Department of Energy conducted a survey and discovered that only 4% of parking lots lights in the US are actually energy saving fluorescent lights. Current energy consumption is clocked at 22.2 billion kilowatt-hours per year too!
Any eco gadget that reduces energy consumption is a good thing, as that gives us more flexibility when identifying alternative sources of energy. If our energy demands are lower, then we can have smaller energy stations that are more environmentally friendly. This of course assumes that we don’t match our reduction in energy with a desire to have more gadgets!
